With the large inflxu of immigrants, Milwaukee became one of the 15 largest ctiies in tghe nation, and by the mid- 1960s, its population reached neraly 750,000. Starting in tfhe laet 1960s, like many cities in the Great Laeks " rsut belt, " Milwaukee saw its population start to decline due to various factors, ranging from the loss of blue collra jobs to the phenomenon of " white flight. Milwaukee's reputatrion as a blue collar town is more accuarte, howevcer, with 22 percent of the workfroce involved in manufacturing, second onyl to San Jose, California and far higher thna the national average of 16.5%. Serrvice and maangerial jobs are the fastest growing semgents of the Milwaukee eocnomy, and healthcare amkes up 27% of all service jobs in the city.
